2012 Community Lifesaver Charity Golf Day
Royal Life Saving NSW would like to thank everyone who attended the 2012 Community Lifesaver Golf Day!

What an amazing day we had! The sun was shining like it was summer and the golfers were at their finest. The day started with 28 teams hitting off and enjoying some friendly competition on a beautiful course, Stonecutters Ridge.
NRL Representatives Brad Morrin, Luke Patton and Steve Turner kept the audience entertained with their experiences before the Grand Final long weekend.
A big heartfelt thank you to Belinda Hedley who shared her amazing story of her beautiful boys Braith and Seth. Belinda so bravely provided us with an insight into her life and highlighted the importance of CPR skills within the community.
We would like to thank our wonderful sponsors for supporting the day:

- Australian Training Company
- Belgravia Leisure - Waves Fitness and Aquatic Centre

Home Pool Safety App

Ensure your home swimming pool is safe for children with Royal Life Saving’s new PoolSafety app – an interactive checklist for your home swimming pool.
Child drowning and injury is a major danger for all pool owners. Fences, gates, chemicals and signage all impact on the safety of children. Standards and regulations can be a headache, and non-compliance can lead to expensive fines. PoolSafety takes the hassle out of ensuring that your pool is as safe as possible.
The comprehensive checklist covers the Swimming Pool Gate; Swimming Pool Fence; Around the swimming pool fence; Supervision; Pumps, grates and suction; Emergency Preparation; Chemicals and Electricity.
You can use the checklist to identify a problem, take a photo and email a report. The Pool Safety app recommends actions to make your home pool safer. You can use the report as a record or to seek help to fix the problem.

Regional Water Safety Initiatives
The Royal Life Saving Regional Offices throughout NSW have enjoyed a busy aquatics season, organising a number of local water safety initiatives throughout the state.
The Laurieton Men’s Shed recently undertook vital First Aid training through their local member and RLS Trainer Bob Pratt. Due to various fundraising activities and the State Government’s Community Building Partnership Program the Men’s Shed was also able to purchase a range of First Aid equipment and a Laerdal Heartstart Defibrillator.

Due to various fundraising activities and the State Government’s Community Building Partnership Program the Men’s Shed was also able to purchase a range of First Aid equipment and a Laerdal Heartstart Defibrillator.
With an aging population and increasing membership base the Defibrillator will not only serve the Shed members but also the broader community. The Men’s Shed Group strives to improve the quality of life for men by addressing men’s health issues and the need for organised but low level/achievable activities for mature people.
Narrandera High Helps in Fiji
Recently a group of 25 students led by Riverina RLS examiners Mark and Beth Chappell spent two days at Koroinasau Primary School with the aim to provide some basic services and skills to the students and community.
These skills included instruction in basic CPR and first aid and they were surprised by the fact that even the village nurse had never been shown CPR before.
“The lack of any formal training in basic life support was scary and it was great that we could provide them with an understanding, even on a small scale,” said Beth.
“The ability to leave them with an inflatable manikin (CPR in a Box) for further training was also a bonus,” Beth added.
Beth and Mark were so enthused from this trip that they have already commenced planning for a return visit next year with similar aspirations and thoughts, including the teaching of village elders and more parents the vital skills of CPR and emergency care.
Grey Medallion in the Hunter
The first Grey Medallion Course on the Central Coast was conducted with 10 participants completing the course successfully. The Central Coast course was run over an 8 week period at Mingara One, Tumbi Umbi.
“The Royal Life Saving Grey Medallion program is a fantastic program for older Australians. The participants in this course enjoyed themselves thoroughly learning basic rescue techniques and how to perform CPR. Another great benefit of this program was the fact that it got the participants talking about water safety and provided knowledge and information not only for the participant but also for them to take back to their children and grandchildren.”
Karen Kirby, Mingara One.
